The Duunka Trust

From the Duunka Trust:

The funding of the piggery project by World Hope International Zambie has brought a lot of awareness to the community. Many people are resorting to pig production other than maize production because of the training they received from WHIZ to implement the project. Individual households are now willing to take up piggery as a family business. Ephram Mwiinka said at a gathering under WHIZ staff member that conducted the training, "This meeting has encouraged me because I feel a sense of belonging and have been given hope. We feel honored to be given such an idea for business."

Available Census:

Caregivers to OVCs:       57
Vulnerable Children:    120
Orphans:                          80
Total OVCs:                   200

Livelihood: projects going on, projects soon to begin, outputs, revenue, etc.

Piggery - the piggery house is modestly finished. The piggery consists of four sows and 22 new born piglets (May 2009), so space is limited in the finished part of the piggery. As soon as the piglets grow in the next 4-6 months, revenue should begin to flow

Home-Based Care: number of clients, visits that happen weekly/monthly, etc.

Currently there are 32 clients being visited by 10 trained caregivers in the HBC program. Six more caregivers are receiving additional community-health training, learning to tackle topics like HIV/AIDS in pregnancy and how to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child.

Some of the HBC clients are nervous about going into the dry, colder season without proper insulation on their homes. Most do not have enough blankets to keep warm. Other clients have mentioned the need during the rainy season for seed and fertilizer.

Community Health: visitations to OVCs, HFC involvement, nutrition program, etc.

Ten mosquito nets were distributed in May 2009.

OVCs often do not have enough blankets for the colder months (our summer is their winter). Others do not have school shoes and are mocked when walking and attending classes. These are the sorts of things we hope the trust will take care of with profits from their projects.

Wells: how many drilled, access to clean water, if no well - what people do to clean the water, etc.

Successful Wells Drilled:                 1

This well has been a life - saver. The water is used for the piggery, as well as for drinking and cleaning.

The hand pump has brought clean and safe drinking water to the community - they are extremely grateful.  "There is a change in the community because now, people have access to safe drinking water," said a local member of the community.

Looking Forward: things on the horizon, prayer requests, praises, etc.

  1. Pray for all the trust caregivers that they remain committed to WHIZ programs.
  2. Pray for committee members to be committed to this program.
  3. Pray for clients that God may be with them, and heal them.
  4. Praise God for the knowledge we [the trust members] are getting in this project.
  5. Praise for God that children under the HFC are really getting the help they need.
  6. Prayer for the cure for HIV/AIDS.
  7. Pray that WHIZ continues to help clients and meet their daily demands.

Other Information:

HFC - sponsored children within this trust are labeled (ZAM-145). As of May 2009, 13 children were enrolled in the program and 3 children were yet to be sponsored.
